Fly Pretty Bird Fly

Can someone explain this:

Giving someone the middle finger when you take a photo of them. What purpose does it serve? To look cool or something? Now I'm all about giving someone the bird when they rightfully deserve it, but every where else? It looks stupid. I don't know, I may be missing something here.

Just like bunny ears. Funny the first time, freaking stupid after that.
